At Holme C of E Primary Academy we aim to develop a fun, high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel individual’s abilities in competitive sports and other physically-demanding activities. We will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Our children will have opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. PE at Holme is an imperative element of the curriculum, which develops a need for healthy life styles, a balanced diet, positive growth mind-set and the resilience to persevere with activities that may be once have felt too difficult. We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.
Our curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils:
PE at Holme is taught by a combination of class teachers, PE specialists and qualified sports coaches. Children have equal opportunities to take part in a range of sports and physical activities within a supportive environment where effort as well as success is recognised. Children are encouraged to participate in exercise through-out the day during PE lessons, clubs, outdoor learning, lunch provision and special events.
As a school we use the PE Cambridgeshire Scheme, to support our delivery of PE. In addition to this we enter competitive tournaments for the children to get involved in, we are going to hold a Mayday festival for maypole and country dancing to be showcased. We also offer extra-curricular activities, currently run by qualified sports coaches which enables further practice and precision of some sports. Our lunchtimes promote active movement through our play leader scheme where planned games are led, play equipment such as dance ribbons, skipping ropes, target practice and much more have been purchased to support physical activity and movement. We promote physical literacy within our school, which is defined as: 'the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.;
Our PE curriculum is high quality, well thought-out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
Children are encouraged to understand the relevance of what they are learning and its relation to everyday life. They should have determination to want to succeed and challenge themselves and take responsibility of their own health and fitness. They should also have the communication, teamwork and leadership skills in which they can transfer to other situations.
We want to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives and undertake new life experiences now and in the future.
