Reception/ Year 1 - Hedgehogs Class

Hedgehogs Class

Reception and Year 1

Welcome to Our Hedgehogs Class Page!

This Term:

Reception

We have a jam packed half term ahead of us in Reception over the next 5 weeks!

Our new theme is ‘Growing and Changing’ and we will be thinking about how people and places change over time, in addition to learning all about plants and how they grow. The children will be exploring lots of wonderful stories following this theme, including Jack and the Beanstalk, The Curious Garden and The Enormous Turnip.

In phonics and literacy the children will be continuing to learn new sound spellings and working on writing labels, lists and sentences. In maths we are extending our number knowledge by exploring building, sorting, sequencing and matching representations for numbers to 10. While it may seem like these are small numbers, at this point in the year it is the mathematical concepts that we are working on the most, so that the children will be able to carry out the same tasks with accuracy, no matter how big the number!

In PSHE we are thinking about our bodies and growing up. As part of this the children will be thinking about how we care for babies, and talking about what our different body parts can do and how we care for them.

In RE we will be getting ready for Easter, and we will be learning about why and how Christians celebrate the festival of Easter and the Easter story. Towards the end of the half term we will enjoy exploring Easter through making patterns, thinking about signs of Spring and possibly even having some chocolate! I can’t wait! (For all of it, not just the Chocolate!).

Year 1

The year 1 children will be doing some work on narrative, continuing to develop their writing structure and creating interesting sentences using a variety of words.

In Maths the children are going to be learning about place value with numbers to 50, and solving problems using the skills of measuring length, height, mass and volume.

In Science the children will be learning about Taking Care of the Earth, thinking about sustainability, recycling and renewable energy.

As part of our History topic of Kings and Queens the children will learn about the concept of monarchy, the family tree of King Charles, and about what the role of the monarch is and how this has changed over time.

We will be enjoying a unit of Style in art, thinking about the different techniques and styles artists use to create their work. We will be looking at a few famous pieces and thinking about how they make us feel, and the role the style plays in this.

Our PSHE unit for this half term is Drug education, thinking about how we can stay safe around medications in the home, and developing the children’s understanding of how and why some everyday items may be harmful if not used in the right way.

Finally, our RE learning this half term is along the theme of Resurrection, linked to the upcoming Christian festival of Easter.

Homework Area

Whilst the children are developing their love of reading, please read with your child as much as possible at home.  This could be using books that come home from school or other medias that you have at home such as reading books and magazines.  Having a love of reading is incredibly important and initially this is what we will be focusing on with our home learning with Reception children.  Thank you for your support with this.  If you have any concerns about your child's development in reading, please do come and speak with us.
